October 10th is World Mental Health Day.
Mental health isn’t only a concern for youth or young adults. In-fact, about 15% of adults over the age of 60 deal with a mental disorder, According to the World Health Organization (WHO).
World Mental Health Day Objective
World Mental Health Day was established for “raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health.”
As a frontrunner in providing the highest quality rehabilitation and skilled nursing care along with mental health care for your loved one, Delmar Nursing and Rehabilitation recognizes the need for greater awareness and support of senior mental health.
Mental Health Issues Among Seniors
So just what are the mental health issues that older adults grapple with?
AgingCare offers the following list:
- Anxiety disorders
- Bipolar disorder
- Borderline personality disorders
- Major depressive disorders
- Dissociative disorders
- Obsessive compulsive disorders
- Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Schizoaffective disorders
- Substance abuse
Quite a depressive list but important to recognize, nonetheless.
What you can do
So where do you come into the picture?
Well, the first step would be to recognize the issues. You can educate yourself and become aware of the abovementioned disorders, their prevalence and symptoms. While this alone probably won’t cure your loved one if they have a mental health condition, it will allow you to become more compassionate towards them and other seniors suffering from these conditions and promote mental health awareness in general.
When your support comes from a place of greater understanding, your loved one is likely to experience your care that way too, which, of course, is generally good for their mental health.
With your increased knowledge along with your familiarity, you may even be able to notice areas needing improvement and pinpoint possible solutions, which you can then support and advocate for.
So awareness can go a long way.
