National Skilled Nursing Care Week
This week marks the nation’s 51st annual National Skilled Nursing Care Week (NSNCW). In 1967, the American Health Care Association (AHCA) helped establish what was then known as National Nursing Home Week, to highlight the role of skilled nursing care centers in caring for America’s seniors and disabled. Since then, the name has changed to its current form, but its spirit has remained the same throughout.
The commemoration, traditionally, begins on Mother’s Day and lasts for seven days. This year’s week, therefore, runs from May 13 through May 19.
Celebrating Life’s Stories
NSNCW typically revolves around a theme that sets the stage and flavor for the activities and focus of the week. This year’s theme is Celebrating Life’s Stories, which seeks to create “a shared sense of purpose in our centers and within the surrounding communities,”1 through listening to the unique stories that shaped the people telling them. By listening to others, not only do we understand them, but we personally grow too.2
